Back to the Future

The paintings are pared down, or built up out of basic blocks, using restricted colour palettes. The vocabulary has been influenced as much by the highly abstracted illusionism of cartoon backdrops, computer games, and Manga, as by Modernist painters such as Frank Stella, Barnett Newman, and Ellsworth Kelly.

There’s a dynamic play on multiple readings, and triggering competing associations in the paintings; it’s kept open-ended through economy of composition- leaving the viewer to fill in the gaps and pot-holes along the way.
